Gathering = Connecting = Community

I recently attended the 9th Annual Tribal Summit at the Twin Arrows Navajo Resort located about 25 miles east of Flagstaff. The theme of the conference sponsored by BlueCross/BlueShield Arizona was called “Reconnecting." For me, it mirrored much of our theme of “Gathering” here at St. Patrick. Many different Native American tribes were represented from different parts of the United States: Navajo, Hopi, Pine Ridge, White Mountain Apache, Hualapai, and several others.

Whether we call it Reconnecting or Gathering, the end result is that Community is involved. Without strength and foundation of community to begin with, how would there be a “re”-connecting or gathering piece? Much of what we did at the conference mirrored what we do here at our parish. Both days began with hospitality of breakfast and sitting with those from a totally different culture. Acceptance and welcoming.

Our host invited someone to open the session in prayer using their native language. She prefaced by saying that, although many may not be able to understand the physical words, it is the energy of the prayer that unites and connects us all. We then were able to choose different break-out sessions led by nonprofit organizers. We gathered, listened, and learned how to better care for one another and how to slowly break down barriers that keep us apart.

The conference concluded with a session led by high-energy Leroy “Buster” Silva from New Mexico. He specializes in behavioral, physical, and nutritional wellness. In short, his session focused on celebrating our different cultures and recognizing that we all experience hardships. It’s in the gathering and connecting that helps to form healthier communities.

In today’s gospel, Jesus asked his disciples who people thought he was and he received a variety of answers. We may have gathered at the conference from a variety of backgrounds and cultures who have different views of God. But, in the end, it’s important to realize there was a common connection….gathering and sharing our skills to serve others.
