First Down with Fr. Eric (August 3, 2025)

Posted on: Aug 03, 2025

Dear Friends,

School ended for most around the end of May, and now there are schools ready to open tomorrow morning, August 4. Where did the summer go? Some of our youth, who, it seems, just entered high school, are ready to graduate this year or are juniors. Our children grow up quickly right before our eyes.

Next Sunday, our parish will be offering a school blessing at all our Masses for students of all grades from pre-school to high school, to college and graduate school, students of any age, and students who are continuing their education at any institution that helps form people. We also include instructors, teachers, teacher aids, professors, as well as coaches and anyone who is instructing and leading students. Of course, schools would not be able to operate without those who work behind the scenes and are vital to the education process. To staff administration, school leaders, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, maintenance, and custodial support.

The purpose of the blessing is to inspire all in the educational process and to know that the knowledge they receive is used to serve all people. We pray for their protection. We pray for encouragement of those who dedicate their lives in service of the students.

We live in an area where education can be seen as important, with more opportunities than some other places. I want to encourage everyone to appreciate this gift of learning, as not everyone in the world or even in our country can fully benefit from what can be offered.

I begin my 16th season at Sunnyslope High School in Central Phoenix, and I enjoy the energy of the youth, the challenge of teaching and mentoring them, and just observing and learning from the school environment.

Looking forward to blessing everyone next weekend.

Peace in Christ,

Fr. Eric
